Watch Your Tweet

Twitter is no longer just a fun social tool, it can cause you to lose your gold medal, get kicked out of political office or fired from your job with the slip of a key. Twitter has started to make front-page headlines more than ever before.  The most recent example of this was the recent London Olympics. You would think that with all of the media attention this social platform has been receiving these days, people would be a little more cautious with their words.

Twitter is a worldwide stage. With your Twitter account, you are essentially broadcasting your views to the world, and you better be ready to stand by them. What is it about Twitter that  (more…)

Gone Baby Gone – Aldea Wood

by Lindsey Maloney of Eclipse Creative

“Not even phased” mumbled David Tapp (Account Executive) with a grin on his face when he learned just after Christmas that yet another Eclipser was pregnant.  Just eight months ago, the lovely Kristine Lee (Senior Account Manager) had her last day before taking her maternity term.  This time, it is one of our beloved designers who is pregnant—Aldea Wood (or better known as @aldywood on Twitter).

Aldea describes herself as a designer whose interests range from “aardvarks to zócalos” and enjoys drawing upon outside experience to bring inspiration to her work. She has done some phenominal art and design work, and I encourage you to poke around her personal sites. (more…)

TMR – Tweet Me Right, Raffi

By Aldea Wood of Eclipse Creative
Listening to Raffi records was a big part of my childhood. I fondly remember seeing him perform at the Children’s festival in Vanier Park. Anyone remember “Baby Beluga,” “The more we get together,” “Peanut Butter Sandwich Made with Jam” and the of-so-fun to sing “Down by the Bay”?
Raffi hasn’t stopped making music since the seventies, and has recently put out a new song from his home on Saltspring Island. It is called Tweet Me Right (The Cairo Tango):
Here is the youtube synopsis:
“The peaceful revolution in his birthplace of Egypt inspired Raffi to write this
song. Partly playful satire with its social media colloquialisms, it is also a celebration: all of our voices can now be heard, and we can all become part of rapid and powerful change.”
A play on the words “Treat Me Right,” the song is about people around the world standing up and asking to be treated with respect and dignity. The social media references are very fitting since the use of social media in organizing social uprisings across the middle east and northern africa is likely unprecedented.
The main chorus goes something like this: OMG, LOL, BRB, TTYL, TMR – Tweet Me Right
I know most of the acronyms, and he has provided a new one for the song (TMR – Tweet Me Right), but I hadn’t heard BRB before.
I asked Dave, an active social media enthusiast in the office, if he knows what BRB stands for. He started laughing and asked if I was serious… Apparently it means “Be right back!” Looks like even in adulthood, Raffi (and Dave) is still teaching me.
For those like me who are still puzzled by odd social acronyms, here is a guide so you don’t have to embarrass yourself in front of abide texters, tweeters and Facebook fans alike (I don’t have a Facebook account):
OMG – Oh my god
LOL – Laughing out loud
BRB – Be right back
LMFAO – Laugh my A** off
TTYL – Talk to you later
and a new one:
TMR – Tweet me right!
What do you think about the song? Is it “kid appropriate”? Did you listen to Raffi growing up? Willing to share any other crazy acronyms I should pick up?

The City of Cleveland Vs. King James

Back in early July, we wrote a blog post about the events that unfolded around NBA star LeBron James’ televised announcement that he was leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers for rival team Miami Heat in the 2010-2011 season.

Since then, LeBron and his PR and marketing firm have done their best to combat the flak he’s received for dropping his beloved fans in Cleveland. Rightfully so, Cleveland was led by a player mentioned in the same breath as (more…)

Personal Branding 101 – Don’t Lose Yourself

LeBron James is set to make an unprecedented step in sporting history; all under the direction of his agency LRMR Marketing. ESPN will be broadcasting an hour long TV special called “The Decision” of the live events leading up to and including the announcement of LeBron’s new team selection in the NBA. The viewership is expected to be in the millions and the NBA couldn’t be happier with all the publicity.

lebronjames.com

lebronjames.com

But with all the big brouhaha over LeBron’s “decision”, one could question what effect his choice has towards his personal brand, and what those consider to be his make up as a player within the NBA. To name a few, here are some options depending on the outcome: 1. Shake up the credibility of the NBA with a big name stealing the entire focus of the greater good of the league or the teams within it. 2. LeBron could be labelled less of a team player for not taking the best “fit” but the best pay out (which with one of the teams could potentially make him a billionaire). 3. Add more fuel to the fire and revive a lull in the National Basketball Association’s attendance, viewers and overall success. 4. LeBron could be labelled as one of the ‘next great Jordan-types’ for picking a good fit and team that will ultimately lead him to an NBA title with a lesser personal payout.

All options are equally intriguing. As for now it’s for us to find out at 6PM this evening and for LRMR Marketing to keep under wraps until then. If you would like to learn more about protecting and building your image, visit us here.

As for tonight – sit back and watch the show here.

Happy Social Media Day!

Today, June 30th, Victoria officially declares #smday in #yyj (or for those who don’t read in hashtags and 140 character text) Social Media Day in Victoria! Now typically, this type of move would take place in larger cities like Toronto, Vancouver, New York etc. Well forget that! In Fact, Victoria has became the first city in the world to officially declare June 30th Social Media Day!

We tip our hats to one Paul Holmes (@tpholmes) for pushing this petition through council and getting Victoria’s mayor Dean Fortin to sign off on it! This proclamation is being picked up on an international scale, from CBC to CNN! To celebrate such a forward thinking momentous occasion, Victoria’s social media enthusiasts will be meeting at The Bengal Lounge in the Empress Hotel at 7:00PM! See you there.
