Look it’s the Old Spice Man! No … It’s Just Pat Prefontaine

“Look at your phone. Now back to me. Now back to your phone. Now back to me. Sadly your phone isn’t me…” Was this really the script Telus had in mind for their latest ad campaign promoting Pat Prefontaine as their front man?

For those who don’t already know, Telus recently launched a series of ads that smell a whole lot like a wildly successful Old Spice Man campaign. While Telus is not the only company attempting to ride on the coattails of Old Spice’s success, they are certainly the most surprising. (See McDonald’s latest Quarter Pounder Deluxe commercial as another debatable imitation).

A lesson in brand building: When you take years investing in memorable and mighty powerful “brand standards”, stick to your guns. Telus has fallen far from its brand strategy of catchy jingles, (Continue Reading…)

War of the Worlds (and Words) Right in our own Office!

By David Tapp of Eclipse Creative

With an ever growing increase in technology and connectivity, practically every educator on the subject will tell you that globalization is breaking down cultural divides everyday … Particularly the case in advertising.

Well I’m here to tell you that culture, geographical differences and ethnic divides are still stronger than ever in the world of communications.

Case and Point:

- We were in the process of creating an advertising concept for a national brand.

- Simon, (in the creative department, originally from Jersey – not to be mistaken with New Jersey) was explaining (Continue Reading…)

My First Day at Eclipse Creative

By Shonna Lavery of Eclipse Creative

NASA Predicted July 11: My Eclipse began July 12… The excitement and anticipation leading up to starting my new job and meeting the new team came without disappointment. I was not the first to arrive, as Jenny was there with a warm welcome, equally as excited as I was. She later informed me it is apparently quite normal for her to be first in the office, as she likes to come in at what others consider to be ungodly hours between 6-7AM , or what I like to think of as ‘prime sleeping time’ .

Me!

Soon after, the door opened and one by one the Eclipse team started to arrive. Immediately I could tell this is a great group of people. It is early Monday morning and they are all enthusiastic and upbeat; an infectious energy to say the least. Although, I will admit Facebook provided me with a brief yet intimate look into the dynamic of this vibrant team prior to my arrival… To my surprise not one of them had a mustache nor were any of them bobble-head characters like the photo albums had suggested.  But what I have discovered by the end of day two is that candy stashes are widely encouraged (Continue Reading…)

Personal Branding 101 – Don’t Lose Yourself

LeBron James is set to make an unprecedented step in sporting history; all under the direction of his agency LRMR Marketing. ESPN will be broadcasting an hour long TV special called “The Decision” of the live events leading up to and including the announcement of LeBron’s new team selection in the NBA. The viewership is expected to be in the millions and the NBA couldn’t be happier with all the publicity.

But with all the big brouhaha over LeBron’s “decision”, one could question what effect his choice has towards his personal brand, and what those consider to be his make up as a player within the NBA. To name a few, here are some options depending on the outcome: 1. Shake up the credibility of the NBA with a big name stealing the entire focus of the greater good of the league or the teams within it. 2. LeBron could be labelled less of a team player for not taking the best “fit” but the best pay out (which with one of the teams could potentially make him a billionaire). 3. Add more fuel to the fire and revive a lull in the National Basketball Association’s attendance, viewers and overall success. 4. LeBron could be labelled as one of the ‘next great Jordan-types’ for picking a good fit and team that will ultimately lead him to an NBA title with a lesser personal payout.

All options are equally intriguing. As for now it’s for us to find out at 6PM this evening and for LRMR Marketing to keep under wraps until then. If you would like to learn more about protecting and building your image, visit us here.

As for tonight – sit back and watch the show here.

Happy Social Media Day!

Today, June 30th, Victoria officially declares #smday in #yyj (or for those who don’t read in hashtags and 140 character text) Social Media Day in Victoria! Now typically, this type of move would take place in larger cities like Toronto, Vancouver, New York etc. Well forget that! In Fact, Victoria has became the first city in the world to officially declare June 30th Social Media Day!

We tip our hats to one Paul Holmes (@tpholmes) for pushing this petition through council and getting Victoria’s mayor Dean Fortin to sign off on it! This proclamation is being picked up on an international scale, from CBC to CNN! To celebrate such a forward thinking momentous occasion, Victoria’s social media enthusiasts will be meeting at The Bengal Lounge in the Empress Hotel at 7:00PM! See you there.
